Impact of habitat fragmentation on Afromontane forest bird community

||The aim of the project is to test hypotheses concerning mechanisms underlying sensitivity of bird and plant communities to forest fragmentation in afromontane environment. Special stress will be laid on complex investigation at several levels of resolution – from factors affecting nesting success through to territorial behaviour and species richness patterns. Specifically, we will focus on testing (1) the relationship between forest fragment characteristics (area, shape and isolation) and species diversity, (2) the role of interspecific competition in structuring of communities in small isolated forest remnants, (3) patterns of nest predation along habitat gradient from forest interior to surrounding matrix. Finding interconnections between plant and bird community patterns will provide insight into general mechanisms driving responses on forest fragmentation.
