Summary:
The project aims on possible mechanisms lagging biological recovery of the Bohemian Forest ecosystems from acid stress. Al is the key element controlling their functional diversity; both through its toxicity and by controlling bioavailability of N and P, i.e. their stoichiometry in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Biological recovery depends on N input and fate of soil N cycling. The level of Al discharge from catchments represents a serious bottleneck of the lake recovery. Al acts on food web complexity both from top-down (toxicity on consumers or predators) and from bottom-up (controlling P availability).
