Libraries of the Institute of Botany, CAS
The Institute of Botany, CAS, manages two specialised libraries (Průhonice and Třeboň). Their collections are developed long-term to meet the needs of the respective division. A part of the collection is permanently deposited in the Brno division of the Institute. Both libraries are intended primarily for the Institute´s employees, but they are also open to students, as well as to the wider expert and lay public. The libraries work closely with the National Library of the Czech Republic, and with the Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences , contributing to the development of their union catalogues. All rights and obligations within the relationship between the library and its user are governed by the Library rules of the Institute of Botany, CAS.
Focus of collections
Průhonice
The collection is organised by subject and has long specialised primarily in: plant and fungal taxonomy, study of plant communities, plant and vegetation distribution, plant ecology, and the history of botanical research.
The core of the collection consists of floras of the temperate zone of both hemispheres, with an emphasis on Central Europe and the former Soviet Union, while tropical flora is represented only marginally.
The collection is significantly shaped by acquired private libraries of several prominent Czech taxonomists of the 20th century – Karel Domin, Josef Holub, and Ivan Klášterský. In the area of lower plants, it includes the estates of Zdeněk Pilous (bryology) and Antonín Vězda (lichenology).
Also essential are the collections of Jaromír Klika (including a substantial portion of European phytocenological literature from the first half of the 20th century), Rudolf Mikyška, Miloš Deyl, or Mr. and Mrs. Neuhäusl.
Approximately one third of the collection consists of geographically organised journals from around the world. A similarly large portion is made up of offprints, and the collection also includes a diverse set of maps.
Třeboň
The collection´s subject focus includes primarily phycology, botany, ecology, and environmental protection, as well as hydrobotany, hydrobiology, and issues related to fishpond management.
At present, it comprises approximately 25,000 volumes, mainly of scientific monographs, journals, and offprints. A significant part is made up of phycological offprints, particularly the collection of Prof. Bohuslav Fott and Prof. Lubomír Kováčik.
