Summary: Isoëtes echinospora a I. lacustris are critically endangered glacial relicts in the Czech Republic, living in two strongly acidified lakes in the Bohemian Forest. In the main distribution area in Europe and N. America, they represent the soft-water vegetation, which has rapidly declined due to acidification. Recently, a considerable reduction of the Bohemian populations and reproduction interruption have been found. However, signs of recovery have also been evident since 2004. According to preliminary experiments it corresponds to pH increase and toxic aluminium decrease in the water. Up-to-date plant fitness (biometry), stand, and reproduction recovery, demography and biotic (mycorrhiza) and abiotic environmental factors for gametophyte and sporeling development will be investigated in Bohemian and Scandinavian lakes. Experiments on effects of pH and Al3+ on reproduction will be conducted. Biological response of quillworts on acidification and indication potential will be clarified.
