Realization to: 2005
Summary: Molecular characters of cyanobacteria are considered as irrelevant to their traditional morphological taxonomy. However, numerous genotype clusters resulting from 16S rRNA sequencing are in a good coincidence with cyanobacterial genera, based on revised cytomorphological and ultrastructural features, kparticularly in coccoid and simple trichal (not heterocytous) morphotypes. Heterocytous cyanobacteria (nostocalean and stigonematalean types) represent a unique evolutionary line, but relations between different morphotypes on the generic level are still unclear and must be solved. The explanation of intergeneric relations with the use of combined molecular and phenotypic methods is urgent also for elaboration of the prepared monograph of European cyanobacteria.
