Realization to: 2026
Summary: The aim of the project is to quantify the contribution of healthcare facilities to the overall load of micropollutants at end-of-pipe wastewater treatment plants through an extensive wastewater monitoring campaign. Direct monitoring will capture a portion of healthcare facilities responsible for at least 60% of the bed capacity and at least 60% of hospitalizations in two selected model cities (regional and district cities). Other project objectives include creating a specialized database of pharmaceuticals found in sewer systems and at wastewater treatment plants, an overview of their metabolites, specific applications in healthcare facilities, their toxic properties for the environment, and a critical review of potential technologies suitable for decentralized reduction of these substances at the point of entry into the sewer system.
