| Summary: | The project seeks novel understanding of what drives the impacts of alien plant species, what is the relative importance of species characteristics, ecosystem and habitat properties, geography, climate and human behavior, and what is the variation associated with species and regions. By mobilizing data on impacts from existing databases, literature, and ongoing collaborations, the project will explore the drivers of impact across spatial scales and a variety of habitats. By scoring the impacts of a large number of species selected with regard to their invasion status and abundance in regions of the world, we will acquire globally relevant information on the magnitude of impacts caused by naturalized and invasive species and integrate this information with knowledge of their distributions and habitats affiliations. This will allow us to reveal whether the factors determining impacts of alien plants differ from determinants of their naturalization and point to areas that are at a high risk of future consequences of plant invasions. |
