Summary: In Taiwan, society and nature are affected by frequent typhoons, which have significantly shifted in their activity over recent decades. Here we aim to provide new insights into the long-term typhoon variations in frequency and intensity of typhoons using multiple proxy records. We will utilize several tree-ring (i.e. width, δ18O) and lacustrine records collected across Taiwan. Tree-ring records will allow us to determine long-term and large-scale changes in activity of typhoons with high resolution (annual to sub-annual). Further, we aim to use high-resolution tree-ring-based typhoon reconstruction to calibrate longer, low-resolution lake sediment records obtained from nearby mountain lakes, which was collected by partner from Taiwan. By combining these records, a holistic picture of typhoon variability can be painted. The project will extend existing research cooperation via novel combination of two approaches. This will allow significantly improve current knowledge of historical typhoon variability, which is necessary for typhoon projections under ongoing climate change.
