Summary: This project focuses on investigating the extreme variability in nucleotide composition of orchid genomes, particularly in relation to the phenomenon of partial endoreplication (PE). The aim is to uncover the mechanisms driving significant differences in GC base pair content by analyzing reference genomes of orchids with the most extreme GC levels. The project tests three hypotheses: the role of third codon positions, differences between exons and introns, and the accumulation of specific repetitive elements. The findings will shed light on the evolutionary significance of PE and its ecological implications.
