This project focuses on exploring under-researched fungal lineages that hold potential for new drug discovery, often overlooked due to challenges in their cultivation and study. By fostering collaboration among seven interdisciplinary teams, the project aims to refine cultivation techniques and enhance natural compound production. Cutting-edge analytical methods will be used to determine the chemical structures of these newly discovered compounds, which will then be tested across a wide spectrum of biological systems. Ultimately, the goal is to identify innovative applications for these substances in treating conditions such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and various infections (bacterial, fungal, and parasitic) impacting human and plant health. The task of the research team of the institute of Botany, together with Institute of Microbiology, is the study of diversity of overlooked fungal lineages with unknown biological effects.
