Summary: Understanding of the taxonomic classification and evolutionary history of any species is a key component to biochemical, ecological and conservation-based studies. The Chaetosphaeriaceae, particularly the genus Chaetosphaeria, are an example of evolutionary change manifested in the morphology of asexual structures, which significantly complicates their taxonomy. In a model genus Chloridium with reduced morphology, we will unravel its complex taxonomy with implications for Chaetosphaeriaceae. The project will assist in understanding the evolution of the whole group using multigene phylogeny, molecular clock and ancestral state reconstruction. Metabolomic analysis will be performed in selected taxa providing first comprehensive data on the profile of natural products. Genomic data will be used to determine the diversity of metabolic pathways for biosynthesis of natural products, plant-degrading enzymes and to search for markers of mating-type genes. The global biogeographical and ecological pattern will be studied within the family using published data from environmental metabarcoding.
