New classification system for European vegetation

A new classification system for vegetation in Europe entitled Vegetation of Europe: Hierarchical floristic classification system of vascular plant, bryophyte, lichen, and algal communities (fulltext, press release) was published in the special issue of the Applied Vegetation Science journal. Vegetation experts from various academic institutions including K. Šumberová from the IB, led by prof. Ladislav Mucina (The University of Western Australia, Perth), worked on the classification for the past 15 years. The work comprises the classification of the vegetation not only of vascular plants, but also of bryophytes, lichens and algae, extensive bibliography, terminological dictionary, species lists and more. The work includes an expert system enabling assignment of phytosociological relevés to higher units (orders, classes) and the EuroVegBrowser software which facilitates the orientation in the classification system.
