Péter Szabó holds MA degrees in History and English, and did his PhD research on medieval woodland history (Central European University, Budapest, 2003). Before joining the Institute of Botany, he worked for the Department of Medieval and Postmedieval Archaeology of Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest. His main research interest is historical ecology, especially the history of Central European woodlands from the beginning of the Holocene until present. He specializes in interdisciplinary research, connecting the humanities (history, archaeology) and the natural sciences (vegetation ecology, palaeoecology). In 2017–2019 he was the President of the European Society for Environmental History. In 2012–2016 he led the ERC funded LONGWOOD project.
