Summary: Tropical cyclones (TCs) are strongly affecting East Asia, over recent decades, TCs’ intensity and size of impacted areas have significantly increased there. These changes have a serious socioeconomic impact and forest ecosystems provide a means for studying them. This project will provide a new baseline for the long-term and large-scale TC activity by using a novel combination of several tree-ring based proxies (tree-ring width, oxygen isotope composition, wood density and anatomy). These high-resolution proxy records will allow us to reconstruct TC activity and link changes in TC activity to specific climatic factors. In addition, we aim to explore the complex impacts of TCs on forest ecosystems. We will determine the effect of TCs on forest structure and ascertain the resilience of numerous tree species and whole forest types to TC disturbances and identify possible shifts in several components of forest resilience to changes in TC activity. This project will broaden our long-term international research and the current extensive database of tree growth and forest structure.
