Summary: Plants are able to regenerate after a damage by resprouting from bud banks. This ability is used by grazed plants of weeds on arable land. While the majority of plants resprout after injury from axillary buds on stems, some (e.g. weeds) use buds which are formed adventitiously on roots. This ability is restricted to about 10% of the Central European flora and is well studied from the point of view of plant ecology. However, there is only very poor knowledge of possible physiological or anatomical constraints. To fill this gap we propose experiments in which we will analyze how fitness of root sprouts is related to the physiology, hormonal balance and anatomy of plant roots across a whole range of herbaceous species. Results of the proposed experiments will contribute to our understanding of the governing factors of bud bank formation on roots instead of stems. The results can help to solve practical challenges in mechanical weed control and in multiplication of crop plants.
