Realization to: 2005
Summary: The lichen Trapeliopsis glaucolepidea occurs in C and NW Europe and in highlands of central and S America and E Africa. The morphological variation of the species is extremely large and it is difficult to assess whether this variation is due to environmental factors or fixed genetical traits. A molecular analysis of variable sequences from 3 different nuclear and mitochondrial loci (ITS, IGS rDNA, mtLSU) shall be performed on a large sample of thalli covering more or less the complete distributional area of the lichen. Mutual comparison of sequences within and among known areas should inform whether some populations already constitute diverged lineages assignable to species of if gene flow persists. The above mentioned spacers and genes are potentially highly variable. After appropriate evaluation of the dataset, i.e. establishing the distribution pattern of single haplotypes, the history of the evolutionary processes within the group shall be assessed
