Summary: Cyanobacteria are important oxyphototroph microorganisms, which are substantial component of various ecosystems. The evaluation of their diversity was changed in last about 30 years, mainly as a consequence of rnolecular approach. They are distributed in all habitats in the biosphere, and colonise sometimes very extreme locations, Knowledge of their speciation, variability and taxonomie classification are necessary for studies in hydrobiology, ecotoxikology, ecophysiology and biotechnology. As the main methodological approach is now accepted combined polyphasic method, based on molecular sequencing, but including also ultrastructural, rnorphological, ecological and biochemical characteristics. The simple coíonial and trichal types, from which lot of strains are available, were studied. Important group of phylogenetically complicated, heterocytous types with heteropolar and differentiated thallus is still almost unknown. The topič of our project is the complex study of natural populations of cyanobacteria mainly from families Scytonemataceae, Microchaetaceae, Rivulariaceae and Stigonemataceae, their laboratory cultivation and evaluation of diversity, based mainly on molecular sequences and detailed phenotype analysis.
