Summary: Taxonomic classification of traditional orders of filamentous green algae is problematic. Nowadays, usually higher taxa are relatively well defined. However, the situation is not solved at generic and subgeneric levels. As an example for our study, we selected polymorphic genera from two orders Chaetophorales and Klebsormidiales. We propose a project interconnecting and discussing three approaches (morphological, ecological and molecular) applied in classification of these orders. The main goal of project is to clarify the taxonomy of polymorphic genera Chaetophora, Draparnaldia, Klebsormidium and Stigeoclonium at generic and subgeneric levels. The first accent will be put on morphological variation of species both from natural habitats as well as from cultures. Three factor crossgaradient experiments will enable us to investigate relationships between morphology and various growth and ecological conditions. Special cultivation equipments will be used for maintaining problematic cultures. All strains will be evaluated by selected genetic methods, particularly by molecular sequencing.
